Give Blood And Give Someone Another
Chance At Life!

“The Heart of What We Do!”

Blood Is A Flowing Medicine

Blood is essential to life. It is living tissue. A single donation of whole blood helps 3 to 4 different people. No artificial substitutes can replace the functions of human blood. There are 4 main blood types: 0, A, B & AB, either positive or negative –AB Negative is the rarest:

•Whole Blood –for blood replacement after severe blood loss. Has a shelf life of 35 to 42 days
•Red Cells –for most patients requiring blood transfusions, or those suffering from trauma, spontaneous bleeding or chronic anemia. Has a shelf life of 35 to 42 days.
•White Cells –to help chemotherapy patients fight infection.
•Platelets –for bleeding problems such as leukemia and other cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Platelets provide the clotting factor in your blood. Has a storage life of 5 days.
•Plasma –for massive transfusions, treatment of bleeding disorders, prevention of viral infectious diseases such as hepatitis or chicken pox, and shock treatment.

How Can I Sponsor A Blood Drive?

The Colonial Virginia Chapter needs blood sponsors, and businesses, schools, churches and community groups are urged to participate. Sponsoring a Red Cross blood drive offers a rare opportunity to realize the hero that lives in all of us and to make a difference between life and death.
